Beagle Feeding Calculator

Get your Beagle's portions right β€” calculated for their weight, life stage, and the exact food in your bag. Because the chart on the bag doesn't know your dog.

Beagle feeding notes

Beagles are notorious opportunistic eaters β€” they will eat whenever food is available and rely entirely on their owners to regulate weight, so free-feeding reliably produces an obese beagle. Measure every meal, use a slow-feeder bowl, and keep treats under 10% of daily calories. A 10 kg adult only needs about 630 kcal per day, so one 100-kcal chew is already 16% of the entire daily budget.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a Beagle eat per day?

A typical 10 kg adult Beagle needs only about 630 kcal per day (RER 394 Γ— 1.6) β€” roughly 1.5 cups of a typical 400 kcal/cup dry food. Count treats in that total: a single 100-kcal dental chew is 16% of the whole day's budget.

Why is my Beagle always hungry?

Beagles are scent hounds bred to hunt all day on endurance, and they are famous opportunistic eaters β€” they will eat whenever food is available and cannot self-regulate (AKC breed guidance). The practical fixes are mechanical: measured meals, a slow-feeder bowl, garbage and counters secured, and part of the daily kibble ration used as training rewards instead of extra treats.

How much should a Beagle puppy eat?

A puppy needs roughly twice the calories per kilogram of an adult, split into 3–4 measured meals a day. By the growth chart above, expect about 4–5 kg at 3 months and 7.5–9.5 kg at 6 months; if your puppy is running well ahead of the chart, slow the growth down rather than speeding it up.

What is a healthy weight for a Beagle?

The breed-standard range is 22–25 lb (10–11.5 kg) for males and 20–23 lb (9–10.5 kg) for females, spanning the 13-inch and 15-inch varieties. The quick check: ribs felt with light pressure and a visible waist from above. If your beagle is over the top of the range β€” and roughly 6 in 10 U.S. dogs are overweight (APOP) β€” the standard first step is a 10% food cut and a re-weigh two weeks later.

My Beagle gained weight but eats the same amount β€” should I be worried?

Mention it to your vet. Hypothyroidism occurs in Beagles and classically shows up as unexplained weight gain and lower energy; it is diagnosed with a blood test and managed with inexpensive daily medication. Also double-check the real intake first β€” unmeasured scoops and family members adding 'just a few' treats explain most mystery weight gain.
