Chihuahua Feeding Calculator

Get your Chihuahua's portions right β€” calculated for their weight, life stage, and the exact food in your bag. Because the chart on the bag doesn't know your dog.

Values auto-fill from the food you pick. Can't find yours? Choose β€œMy food isn't listed” in the search and copy the numbers from the bag's Calorie Content (ME) label β€” dry foods typically run 3,300–4,200 kcal/kg.

Chihuahua feeding notes

A 1.5-2.7 kg adult needs only about 150-225 kcal/day β€” roughly half a cup of typical dry food β€” so 'just one extra treat' can equal 10% of the day's calories. Chihuahua puppies are prone to hypoglycemia: feed 3-4 small meals a day until 6 months and keep a sugar source (honey or corn syrup) on hand for wobbly episodes, then call your vet. Crowded small teeth favor calorie-dense small-breed kibble and VOHC-accepted dental chews.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a Chihuahua eat per day?

A 2.5 kg neutered adult needs only about 220 kcal/day (RER 139 Γ— 1.6) β€” roughly half a cup of a typical 400 kcal/cup dry food. Very small 1.5-2 kg adults may need as little as 150-180 kcal. Calculate from your dog's current lean weight, not the bag's feeding chart, which is usually generalized across sizes.

How big will my Chihuahua get?

The breed standard calls for 1.5-3 kg, and the American standard disqualifies show dogs over 6 lb (2.7 kg). Pet Chihuahuas often run larger β€” 3-4.5 kg is common and healthy for bigger-boned dogs. Males average about 1.4-1.8 kg at 4 months and around 2.4 kg at 8 months, with growth mostly finished by 10-12 months.

Why is my Chihuahua puppy shaking or wobbly?

Often hypoglycemia: toy-breed puppies have minimal energy reserves and can crash if a meal is missed, showing trembling, weakness, or wobbly walking. Feed 3-4 small meals a day until about 6 months; for an episode, rub a little honey or corn syrup on the gums and call your vet (toy-breed hypoglycemia first aid, Veterinary Nursing Journal, 2022). Persistent shaking has other causes β€” cold, pain, dental disease, neurologic issues β€” so don't assume sugar every time.

Are teacup Chihuahuas a real breed?

No β€” 'teacup' is a marketing term for undersized puppies, not an AKC variety, and deliberately ultra-small dogs carry higher risks of hypoglycemia, dental disease, bone fractures, and anesthetic complications. A well-bred Chihuahua at 1.5-3 kg is already among the world's smallest dogs. Breeders advertising 1 kg adults are prioritizing price over health.

When should I switch my Chihuahua to adult food?

At 9-12 months β€” toy breeds mature faster than large dogs, and a puppy formula's extra calories become excess once growth slows. Transition over 7-10 days. At this size, monitor weight monthly: gaining just 0.3 kg on a 2.5 kg dog is 12% overweight β€” proportionally like a 74 kg person gaining 9 kg.
